PROCESS PIECE

Artist Statement
The audio we chose to record was the
process of making copies from a copy machine, then hole punching, cutting, and
stapling the pieces of paper together. We chose this particular process because
we thought it was interesting how making and preparing copies is a pretty
regular routine, but it is not something where we stop and pay close attention
to the sounds it produces. As a matter of fact, there are several other
processes that occur everyday and we don’t stop for one second to notice it.
The sound that occurs during this particular process is actually quite
intriguing and soothing to listen to. It makes us realize the beautiful sounds
the most unlikely things can produce and how those they all around us.
This process relates to the topics we
discussed in class because in all of the clips we watched, the sound was fairly
enhanced and provided more of an impact to what was happening. Without the
sound, the clips would have been a lot less interesting and it would have been
more difficult connect with what was going on. In our recording, the sound is
also quite enhanced and essential to the overall effectiveness of the process. In
a way, the sound almost causes the listener to feel as if they are actually in
the copy room preparing for these various pages to be made.
The process relates to other forms of
media as well, primarily to making a film completely without sound. While
documenting a process without the use of any audio can be difficult because it
is harder to experience or relate to the process taking place. It makes the
process seem much less interesting and just incomplete. There seems to be some
sort of lack of depth or connection while filming an entirely silent process.
The sound becomes key and makes the process truly come to life.
